The buffalo were once tens of millions roaming the plains of the American Great West. At the end of the 19th century, they were little more than 300 on the United States as a whole. Only 23 in Yellowstone National Park, then newly created and yet large as Corsica. A patient conservation policy saved them from extinction on the continent. The buffalo rebirth is one of the greatest victories achieved by conservation actors.
This success even surpasses all hope and poses new challenges. In Yellowstone Park in particular, bison are now close to the excess. How to gain new land for buffalo?
