Carco was born in Nouméa in 1886 and died in Paris in 1958. He wrote more than a hundred books that were essentially situated in the Pigalle-Clichy-Montmartre underworld. He was primarily a provincial man, a poet and a friend of painters (Utrillo, Picasso, Modigliani and many others). He was also a journalist and scriptwriter and even acted in one of the films he adapted, based on his book ”Prison de Femme” (Woman’s Prison).
