Between North and South America, the forces of the Earth have made a very small place for what is called Central America and a tectonic plate: the Caribbean plate. This plaque is essentially a marine world that Thierry Calmus for his origins and François Michel for his contemporary history know perfectly well.
But at the borders of this territory, four immense masses compress, crush and shake this “paradise on earth”. These are North and South America and the oceans, Atlantic and Pacific, Earthquakes, volcanic eruption are the common lot of Central America. Dominique Gibert innovates in the analysis of volcanoes in Guadeloupe, at the Soufrière, while Jose Luis Arce watches over Mexican volcanoes in the Pacific Ring of Fire.
As for earthquakes… there are many teams in Haiti in order to hope one day to predict the unleashing of the forces stored in the earth and that the slippages between plates sometimes release, but the symbolic image of Central America is the junction of the two giants of the North and South with the closure of Panama. In addition, the establishment of Panama would have changed the fauna of the Americas and transformed the Earth’s oceans.
